I called Roadmaster about the issue of the Roadmaster Base Plates # 1123-1. They did say that the # 1123-1 will fit a 1986 Toyota 4Runner with torsion bar suspension.

Since these are Roadmaster Standard base plates, I would use a Roadmaster tow bar compatible with standard style base plates. The most popular tow bar for standard base plates is the Roadmaster Falcon 2, # RM-520. This is an RV mounted tow bar with a 6,000 pound capacity. I have included a link to the installation details and a video review of this tow bar for you.

To flat tow your 4Runner you will also need safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. For safety cables I recommend the Roadmaster Single Hook Coiled Cables, # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables from contacting the ground.

For lighting, there are several options depending on what will work best for your specific application. I have included a link to an FAQ article that covers the various options.

Most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle that is being towed. The easiest to install and use is the Roadmaster Even Brake, # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the brakes in the vehicle being towed in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This reduces wear and tear on both vehicles and is the safest way to stop.

I have also included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you.
