Tandem Tire Clearance Needed for Upgrading from 235/80-16 to 235/85-16 on Trailer

Question:

We currently have 235/80 -16 tires and we would like to go to the Goodyear 235/85 -16 but we do worry that the tires might rub each other if there is a big bump in the road. We tried a light truck tire before and we had problems with them rubbing together and then had major blow outs. We would have to buy new rims for the 110 lb so it’s a bigger investment with 6 tires and 6 new rims. Thank You

So your current tire size of 235/80 -16 has a diameter of 30.9 inches and the size you are interested in going up to of 235/85-16 is 31.6 inches. That means the distance between your current tires would decrease by .7 of an inch.

As a general rule of thumb the minimum safe distance between front and rear tires on the same side of a tandem axle trailer is 4 inches. So if you have 4.7 inches currently you could upgrade the tire size with a tire like the # TTWPRG235R16 and you'd be fine.
