Recommended Axle Installation with Spring Seats Too Wide for Spring Locations

Question:

I have an older deck over trailer. The original axles have a spring seat of 62inch and a hub face of 85. I want to replace with modern 5x4.5 3500lb axles. I understand I will have to weld spring seats on as this is not a common location. However a friend said he thought, it was too much space between the wheel and the spring seat. And would put too much weight to the center of the axle, before I order the axles I wanted to make sure there wasnt an issue with moving the spring seats in 8inch 4 on both sides.

Moving the spring seats that far is not recommended for the reason your friend gave as it doesn't carry the weight evenly. My recommendation for you so you don't need to worry about the springs is to use the Timbren Axle-Less System # A35RS545E. This will replace leaf springs and mount to your frame giving you the support needed. You can use a 2 inch square bar between the assemblies in the integrated holes.

Another option is to use the Timbren Silent Ride Suspension for Tandem Axle Trailers w/ 2-3/8" Round Axles # TSR7000T04 to use through axles. This system requires a 2x4 inch hollow steel Crossmember with 3/16 inch call thickness between the assemblies. It sounds like your axles are too long for your mounting locations and in this case you would run into the same issue of being too narrow a mounting location.
