Recommended Weight Distribution & Sway Control for Small Hybrid Camper

Question:

I have a 20 foot hybrid camper thats 20 feet long 3400lbs dry and 330lbs tongue weight and a Jeep that can tow 6200lbs. Which weight distribution hitch and sway control would you recommend? Im seeing lots of people recommending larger weight distribution kits for smaller campers, and Im told going bigger makes the trailer ride more rigid. Does anyone sell anything smaller for hybrid campers? Thanks

Weight distribution fit is determined by the total tongue weight of the trailer. This total tongue weight includes the loaded tongue weight of the trailer (not the dry weight) as well as any cargo weight behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. In your case this won't be much because you have a jeep without much cargo space.

A system rated too high can create a rigid ride, so you want your total tongue weight to fall in the middle range of your weight distribution system's total tongue weight range. I've linked an article to assist with more information to assist.

For your application, the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar # RP66082 is my recommendation. This has a total tongue weight range between 200 and 600 lbs and has an active sway control system that will prevent sway that will be ideal for your lightweight trailer and your Jeep's higher center of gravity.

You will also need hitch ball # A-90 for a 2 inch diameter ball or # A-6 for a 2-5/16 diameter ball compatible with your trailer coupler.
