Adapter Recommendation for Converting 4-Way on 2018 Highlander to 5-Way
Question:
I have a 2018 Toyota Highlander with the trailer hitch already installed. The plug is a 4 pin and my boat trailer is a 5 pin. Can I just simply plug the trailer into the Highlander or will I be unable to put the trailer in reverse without engaging the brakes? Thanks for our help!

Without having a circuit active for the 5th circuit of your trailer's wiring you won't be able to back the trailer up without activating the brakes. What you need is the adapter part # 20036. This will convert the 4-way to a 5-way on your 2018 Highlander and allow you to run a wire to the reverse light circuit of your vehicle so that you can activate the reverse lockout solenoid.
The install video I attached below shows this installed on a similar 2015 Highlander.
