Compatibility and Opinion on Electric Brakes On a Boat Trailer
Question:
Do you recommend switching from hydraulic drum surge breaks to electric brakes for a boat trailer

Helpful Expert Reply:
Surge braking systems are a good system, but they don't let you control your braking in the same way as an electric braking system. I personally do recommend switching to electric because of the ease of use and cost savings. The only draw back to consider is that you need to unplug your trailer prior to backing into the loading ramp to launch or load your boat. Obviously electricity and water don't mix well and people have avoided electric brakes on boat trailers due to this in the past, but now many boat trailer manufacturers are making trailers with electric brakes installed from the factory.
This switch requires a brake controller like # 90195, so if you let me know your tow vehicle and your trailer axle capacity, I can help get you the parts you need.
The best of both worlds would be to use an Electric Over Hydraulic system like # HS381-8066.
