Recommended Coupler Replacement for Custom A-Frame Trailer

Question:

I am trying to figure out what replacement A-frame coupler I need to replace on my horse trailer. Ive noticed many of the couplers on your site talk about 50-degree. What is the 50-degree describing? Does this create a drop or rise? Im installing on a horse trailer that apprently was homemade or customized. It looks like the coupler that was welded on is pretty straight. I can send a picture if that would help. Are there specific measurements that I could make that would help determine which one is the right fit for my trailer? I have been looking at the Fulton 50-degree A Frame Coupler 5/16 ball low-profile latch Thanks in advance

The A-frame couplers are a standard 50 degrees angle from outside of frame rail to outside of frame rail where they come together to meet the coupler. The Fulton coupler # FE443050303 you mentioned will be a good replacement for most trailers as long as they fit within the 10,000 lb weight capacity. This coupler will give you a standard hole for a trailer jack as well as fits the standard 3 inch on center mounting holes of most jacks.

Couplers like this are not rated for a rise or drop, but the top of the hitch ball will be almost level with the frame that you will weld this coupler onto.

If your custom trailer has a different angle, you will need to do some customized mounting to have a compatible trailer coupler. It is highly likely that the trailer was made to fit an existing standard A-frame coupler.
