5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Ram 3500 Short Bed With Factory Tow Prep Package

Question:

I just purchased a 5th wheel camper 2017 Coachman Chaparral that is fitted with the Turn-Tec Eng turning radius designed for short bed trucks. I also just purchased a new 2018 Ram 3500 Longhorn Crew Cab 4X4 with factory 5th wheel/gooseneck towing prep group package to pull the camper. My understanding is that with the camper I purchased, I dont require a slider type hitch.....is that correct? Also, Im curious about whether I can use a gooseneck type adapter instead of the 5th. wheel hitch. Looking for the best and safest ride without compromising my trucks cab. Please provide your expert advice. Thanks...

For your particular trailer with a 2018 Dodge Ram 3500, you wouldn't hurt anything to just get a sliding hitch.

You could use a gooseneck adapter, however, these tend to be limited in weight and put additional stress on the trailer's frame, so if you're able, it's better to just move to the 5th wheel.

However, I would still recommend getting a sliding hitch, just in case, as the ability to slide the hitch can help out in some tighter spaces when backing up.

If you are wanting a fixed 5th wheel hitch, I recommend the Curt 25K, part # C16046. This is a hitch that will drop directly into your factory kit and let you get to towing the trailer as quickly as possible. It has a 25,000 pound capacity and a 360 degree pivoting and swiveling head.

If instead, you'd like to get the sliding hitch, Reese's 20K Slider Hitch, part # RP30083 and its adapter kit, part # RP30154 will add the option of a sliding hitch to your vehicle and allow for you to use it if you need to in order to make slower speed turns.

I've included a video review of both hitches so you can get an idea of their particular features and benefits.
