Bike Rack for 2 Kids Bikes for Use on 2016 Kia Sedona and 2018 Kia Sorento

Question:

We have a 2016 Kia Sedona and a 2018 Kia Sorento. Were interested in the: Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack for Vehicles w/ Spoilers - Trunk Mount - Adjustable Arms. Item # HRF2-3. The web site says it would fit the Sorento but it is not confirmed that it could fit the Sedona too. Will it fit the Sedona so we can switch between both cars? Would we need the bike adapter bar HRBA-PRO. We have 2 childrens bikes, 24inch and 20. Thank you.

I checked all trunk-mount bike carrier fits for your two vehicles, the 2016 Kia Sedona and the 2018 Kia Sorento, to see if we have any 2-bike trunk carrier confirmed to fit properly on both vehicles. Racks fits for each car are displayed on the two linked pages, one page for each vehicle. Unfortunately none of the 2-bike carriers we sell correctly fits both of your cars.

In order to use one bike rack on both cars you would need to go with a hitch-type rack and install a hitch on each of the two vehicles. There will definitely be a wide range of hitch-type racks that can work on both cars.

Advantages of hitch racks are that your vehicles' sheet metal (and roofline spoilers) will not have to bear any weight. A loaded 2-bike trunk rack can easily weigh close to 90 or 100-lbs. This is enough weight to dent some metalwork and/or damage some plastic spoilers. A hitch rack also allows you to transport many more bikes, as many as 5 if you choose a rack with that much capacity. Plus the presence of a hitch on the cars means you also have the ability to use other hitch-mount accessories, such as a cargo carrier like Pro Series # 63153, and also means you could tow a small trailer.

The hitch I suggest for the 2016 Sedona is Curt # C13115; this is the lower-priced option and it offers a 400-lb tongue weight capacity for even the largest racks and heaviest bikes. For the 2018 Sorento I suggest Curt hitch # C13195 which has an even higher 750-lb tongue weight rating. This hitch requires you to use a support strap # 18050 when using a bike rack. If you prefer to avoid this need simply use the other hitch for the car, Draw-Tite # 75908.

On the other linked page you can see all of out hitch bike racks that fit these 2-inch hitches. For a basic but good-quality 4-bike rack that won't break the bank (any more) I suggest the Thule Hitching Post, part # TH934XTR. This tilting rack will fit well on both vehicles. For adapter bars you can use # HRBA-PRO.

If you definitely only need to transport the two kids bikes you could use the Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Rack # S63360. Since this rack has arms spaced closely together often an adapter bar will not be needed. The outside-to-outside arm spacing is 11-1/2-inches. Compare this to the two bikes' frame size to see if you can save the cost of the adapter bars.
