Weight Distribution/Sway Control Hitch for Camper Trailer Towed by 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question:

I am looking for a weight distribution system with sway bar to tow a camp trailer. Dry weight of the camp is 4000lbs with TW of 450 lbs, the carrying load is 3000lbs. My car is a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with a towing of up to 5000lbs. What will be the best option for this combination? Thanks.

We can help you select a weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) set-up for your camper trailer that has a dry hitch weight (or tongue weight) of 450-lbs. And we have both systems with separate friction-style sway control units like Reese # 83660 and systems with integrated anti-sway such as the Fastway Trunnion Bar system # FA92-00-0800. The integrated type of anti-sway typically performs a lot better than the separate friction units and they also allow you to back up the trailer; friction units must be disconnected before you can back up.

The key to selecting the right set-up is knowing the tongue weight (TW) of the trailer when it is completely loaded and ready for the road. We offer a scale # e99044 that makes it easy to confirm your actual loaded TW. You also need to add any cargo weight in the vehicle that will be positioned behind the rear axle since this too will act just like TW to the WD system. Please refer to the linked article and video for more on selecting a WD/SC system. I also linked our main page for integrated systems; click on your total TW to see appropriate options.

If your dry hitch weight is 450-lbs then your loaded TW is likely to be in the range of 600-lbs or so. A good choice in this case is the Curt TruTrack # C17499 which works with total TW from 500-lbs to 800-lbs. All you need to add is a hitch ball like 2-inch # A-90.
