How Does Trailer Battery Charge

I want to add an Rv battery to our cargo trailer for inside lighting. How do I hook up so it charges while driving, I will be installing on/off switch after the battery to keep from draining it and also using the junction box for 7 way

Expert Reply:
The 7-way of your tow vehicle has a circuit that is commonly used for maintenance charging a trailer battery. It's the 12 volt power circuit that is in the 1:00 position. If you have this circuit complete on the vehicle and to the junction box like # 38656 all you have to do is then run 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 from the box to the positive post of the battery and you'll be set.
If the 7-way on your vehicle does not have that circuit active you will want to run 10 gauge wire from the 1:00 pin to the vehicle battery through a breaker like part # 9510 and you'll be set.
One way you can prevent the battery on the trailer from draining a vehicle battery is to install a one way diode like part # RM-690 on the charge wire so that current can only flow in one direction.
