Does GVWR or GCWR Indicate Towing Capacity of Truck for Fifth Wheel

Question:

I have a 2004 5.9L diesel Ram 2500 short bed truck. I am looking at purchasing a 5th wheel. I know the truck says GVWR 9000lbs. That doesnt really tell me how heavy of a trailer I can haul. Could you help me out here. Thanks

Expert Reply:

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross vehicle mass (GVM) is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo BUT excluding that of any trailers.

It's not always evident what a truck's max capacity is, even by reading the owner's manual, but if you look at the ratings sticker on the driver's side door jamb, you can get an accurate statement of the truck's towing abilities. On the sticker, look for the Gross Combined Weight Rating, GWCR which is the maximum amount the truck plus the fully loaded trailer can weigh. From that, subtract the GVW, which represents the curb weight of the vehicle, plus gasoline, cargo and passengers. The result you get will be the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can handle.
