Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring for a 2007 Toyota Tacoma 4x4

Question:

I have a 2007 tacoma 4x4 regular cab , Im looking to install a 7 pin connector and a trailer brake controller , now my question is I think I found the connector under the dash , can I just buy a harness for it ? Or do I still need to hardwire it ? And if so what is the purpose of that connector ? Thank you

For your 2007 Toyota Tacoma, because you don't have the factory 7-way and yet have the adapter for a brake controller, it is likely that part of the harness is there without the connections made in other parts of your truck. You will still need to hardwire your brake controller.

For your brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller with a nice LCD screen that takes code deciphering out of the equation. In many ways this is a major way this controller is set apart as others will use letters and LED lights to signify any issues or settings, where the P3 is user friendly with presets and clear communication.

To connect your brake controller, you will need to start with a 4-way flat connection. If you don't already have this, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118496 confirmed to fit your truck. I've attached a video of this installation for you.

Then you will need to use the Universal Brake Controller Wiring Kit # ETBC7 to finish your wiring. It comes with the connectors, circuit breakers, and of course the 7-way socket. I've linked a video as well as an article to assist.
