How to Determine if a Flex Air Pin Box Will Clear Taller Bed Rails on a 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Question:

I currently own a 2017 F350 with a 8 foot bed. I am purchasing a Grand Design Solitude 310GK with the Roto flex. I would like to know if you have had any reports of the Flex air not being compatible with the deeper boxes of the Ford truck? How can I be sure that the Flexair will not come in contact with my bed rails? Thank you !

We haven't heard any reports of that specific combination having issues, but we do know that there have been issues with newer Ford trucks like your 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty.

The problem with clearance will not have to do with the Flex Air as much as it will have to do with your trailer. Basically you will want to make sure that you can adjust your pin box and 5th wheel hitch so that you have 5" - 6" of bed rail to trailer height clearance, and that the nearest point of your trailer to the back of your truck is no less than 4" - 5" for turning. I have attached a photo to demonstrate these measurements for you.

For example, you can take the measurements of the Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box # LC369535, which replaces 1621 pin boxes, and compare those with the height settings of your 5th wheel hitch to determine clearance. I reached out to my contact at Lippert and found that this pin box measures 19-9/16" tall from the bottom of the king pin to the top of the box. As far as length goes it is 29-9/16" long from the center of the king pin to the back of the box. Please note that your Flex Air will need to be a replacement for the specific pin box number that you have.

I have attached a photo demonstrating these measurements for you as well.
