Recommended Tires for Forest River 5th Wheel Trailer with 10,596 Pound Loaded Weight

Question:

We recently purchased a used almost new 31foot 2017 Forest River Rockwood Ultra Lite Fifth Wheel 2720WS. The GVW all fluid tanks full + UVW + all cargo is 10,596 lbs. The four tires we have are Castle Rock ST225/75R15. We are planning on being Full-Time RVrs. I am concerned these tires will not handle the load. They have a Speed Rating of L 75mph max. They have a D load range. Max Load of 2540 lbs. What is your recommendation? Will these tires be OK or should we upgrade?

Helpful Expert Reply:

The existing tires on your Forest River Rockwood Fifth Wheel Trailer, which feature a Load Range D of 2,540 pounds, will give you a total load capacity of 10,160 pounds with all four tires on the trailer. This capacity falls quite a bit below the 10,596 pound loaded weight of your trailer that you mentioned, so I definitely recommend upgrading to a tire with a greater load capacity.

I recommend taking a look at the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15 inch Silver Mod Wheel # LHAW124 if you have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, or for just the tire you can use # LHWL304. This is the same size tire that you have currently mounted but with a Load Range E of 2,830 pounds at 80 psi. This will give you a combined load capacity of 11,400 pounds for the tires on your trailer. They also feature a speed rating of 75 mph.

A great thing about this particular tire is that it comes with a 5-year warranty and 2 years of complimentary roadside assistance. I have attached a short video demonstration on this product that you can also check out.

Lastly, I recommend checking the specifications of your trailer to make sure you are not overloading its capacity. This information should be listed somewhere on the trailer itself or you can check with the manufacturer for its maximum loaded weight.
