Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2015 VW Golf SportWagen TDI

Question:

Hi, I want to add a trailer hitch to tow a small tear trailer on my 2015 VW golf sport wagen TDI with the modification on it. AD Blue. What do you have that will work? What about break options for the trailer and electrical break hook up?

For your 2015 VW Golf SportWagen TDI, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch # 24949. This Class I hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and will use existing holes in the VW's frame for a no-drill installation. The hitch itself has a towing weight capacity of 2,000 pounds but you will want to check your vehicle's owner's manual for its capacity. It is very likely that your VW Golf SportWagen has a lower capacity than what this hitch can handle. You will need to follow whichever capacity is lower.

I have attached the installation instructions that you can take a look at.

Then for a trailer wiring harness, I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter # C59236. This universal harness will install a 4-Way flat on your vehicle by splicing into its existing wiring. The powered converter will connect directly to the battery to reduce strain on the vehicle wiring. The 4-Way will connect to the trailer in order to power its basic signal lights.

If you plan on towing a trailer that is equipped with brakes, you will need to add the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This kit includes everything needed to install a fully functional 7-Way connector from the existing 4-Way, along with the additional wiring needed to install a brake controller. I have attached a great article that details the installation steps for this kit that you might find helpful.

For the brake controller itself, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your vehicle. It features an easy to read digital display and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues.

Lastly, in order to tow a trailer, you will need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached an article that explains how to choose the right one for your setup, along with a link that will take you to our available selection. I have also included a couple articles on trailer towing that you can check out.
