Flat Towing Supplemental Braking System Recommendation for 2002 Jeep Wrangler

Question:

Hello, I recently purchased the Blue Ox Patriot II braking system for use with my 2002 Jeep Wrangler based on good reviews and recommendations from other RVers. I have run into two problems with the Blue Ox - specifically for use with the Jeep. The first is that the seat lever moves the seat forward and backword is in the way and prevents the pads from making proper contact with the seat. Additionally, if the unit does exert any pressure towards the seat, it will push the seat lever up, which could move the seat. This doesnt seem like a good thing to have happen while towing. The second is that the Blue Ox requires power from the cigarette lighter. The Wrangler 12v lighter only operates while the vehicle is on, which it is not when you are towing. I have read that I can rewire the 12v outlet to solve this. But, my question is, is there another portable breaking system that you would recommend for use with the Wrangler that will not run into these problems? Thanks!

I think your best option would be the SMI DUO part # SM99251. This is a permanent install kit but it's basically the best all around option that would address the issues you have as well. Unlike other similar kits though this one is much easier to install. Based on how it install it won't interfere with the seat either. It also draws power directly from the battery so you'll have the outlet issue avoided as well.

I attached an install video for this for you to check out on a similar Wranger as well.
