Brake Controller Recommendation for 2016 Toyota Tacoma and Brake Setup for Boat Trailer
Question:
I am looking to put electric brakes on my boat trailer. Currently no brakes are installed. I have the flange with four holes. The trailer GVWR is 2720 lbs. There is only one axle. The GAWR also shows as 2720lb. I have 13 inch wheels with a bolt pattern of 5 on 4.5. Ill need the brakes, drums and bearings. the Tow vehicle is a 2017 Tacoma with the factory tow package. I have the 7 pin at the bumper and will need a compatible brake controller, am thinking proportional. I guess, im looking for a pick list of all the parts I will need to install. thank you,

Most likely the hub drum you'd need is the part # AKHD-5475-35-EZ-K which is designed to fit 3,500 lb axles like what your trailer most likely has. To be sure you'd need to pull off a current hub that you have and get the dimensions of the spindle where the bearings ride. If it's 1.06 inch and 1.378 inch then this is the correct hub. This has the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern that you said you need as well. The matching assemblies that you'd need would be the part # AKEBRK-35R-SA for the right hand side and part # AKEBRK-35L-SA for the left hand side.
If the trailer has a 4-way on it the kit we carry that is designed to convert it to a 7-way is the part # HS381-9000. The correct brake controller install harness you'd need is the part # 3031-P.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. This will be the last brake controller you buy. It can easily be transferred to future vehicles as well.
