Generator Cargo Carrier for a 2000 Honda Odyssey

Question:

I need a cargo carrier strong enough to hold a Honda EU7000is generator 261 lb dry, plus 5 gallons gas 40 lb? and around 50 lb extra for misc. stuff. Will need to buy car hitch to match, for 2000 Honda Odyssey V6 van. What is the best equipment for this?

Your best setup is going to be a Class III trailer hitch with a ramped carrier, given the dry weight of the generator. 300 pounds is a pain to lift off of the ground even once, so we'll stick to ramps.

Prior to equipping the hitch, you'll want to verify your vehicle's towing and tongue weight capacity with your owner's manual or manufacturer.

For the trailer hitch, your best option is the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver, part # 75270. This provides the ability to take advantage of up to 675 pounds of the vehicle's tongue weight capacity With a 2 inch hitch, you'll be able to use a wide range of cargo carriers and accessories.

For the carrier, I recommend the Flint Hill Goods 30 x 50 Carrier with 48 Inch Ramp, part # FHG77ZR. This will allow you to roll the generator up and into the carrier, as well as coolers and any other wheeled gear you may have. The mesh styled bottom will provide a wide range of tiedown points for you to secure your gear to, and enough room to carry the gas separately from the generator, as well as your other gear.

I've included a video of our team installing the hitch onto a 2000 Honda Odyssey and a video review of the cargo carrier. Additionally, I've added our hitch installation FAQ to help the process be smoother for you.
