10 by 2-1/4 Inch Brakes Needed for a 20 foot Trailer with Brake Mounting Flanges

Question:

I am looking to add electric brakes to my 20 foot trailer. The trailer does have the flange already on there. I need 10 x 2 1/4 drums and believe I need the brake assemblies and hubs. Please check to make sure those parts are compatible with each other. I am also unclear the difference between AKHD-545-35-K and AKHD-545-35-EZ-K please explain. Also, I have a 2005 GMC Envoy factory 7-way adaptor. My trailer has the flat-4 connector. I need to run another brake line to both brakes. Whats the adaptors or wires I need to make this happen? Thanks.

The # AKEBRK-35L-SA and # AKEBRK-35R-SA brake assemblies will work on an axle with a 4 bolt mounting flange that has bolt holes 2-7/8 inches on center apart.

The Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly, # AKHD-545-35-K, is designed to work on trailers with spindles that accept the # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearing, and the # 58846 single lip seal, and with wheels that have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. You should check these items to be sure you are selecting the correct parts. If your parts are different, let me know and I will help select the correct hubs for your application. These hubs are compatible with the brake assemblies you selected.

The difference between the # AKHD-545-35-K and # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K is only the grease cap. The EZ lube grease cap with rubber center plug is designed for trailers with an EZ-Lube axle that has a grease zerk on the end of the spindle.

You will need a brake controller in your 2005 GMC Envoy with factory 7-way trailer connector. I would recommend the Prodigy P2, # 90885, which will be hard wired to the wires present under the dash of your Envoy. You will find these wires taped to the main wiring harness near the steering column and they will be labeled for correct installation. You may also need to make a couple of connections under the hood. We have an article detailing the connections that may need to be made, see link. Your envoy is wired similar to the 2007 and newer GM trucks.

For your trailer you will need an appropriate length of 10 gauge double bonded wire, item # 10-2-1, to go from the trailer connector back to the trailer brake on one side and then across to the other side. You will most likely want to go with a 7-Way RV trailer side connector, item # PK12706. The trailer brake magnets are not polarity sensitive so just make one wire hot and the other wire ground.
