Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring for 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 and 2004 Monaco Diplomat Motor Home

Question:

I just purchased a 26 ft. enclosed car trailer and heading to pick it up in 2 weeks in Georgia. I will be pulling this trailer behind two different vehicles. I have a 2006 Dodge 3500 dully and a 2004 Monoco Diplomat 40 ft Diesel Pusher Motor home. Im looking at the Tekonsha P3 #90195 that comes with the 3020-P wiring kit on your site. Im unable to tell if the same unit would work on the motor home. There is a controller in the motor home but I have never used it and not sure of the brand but I have owned the motor home for 4 years and have never turned it on so dont know much about it and I keep the motor home off site so not sure other than I know it is wired to the rear of the coach. My wife and I spend the winters in Arizona and will be heading that way on January in the motor home in January with the trailer in tow hauling a 2010 Ford Taurus and an 2010 Harley Davidson Road King and I want to make sure the brakes on the trailer work correctly. Other times the trailer will be behind the Dodge or parked. Can you give me some buying options?

Starting with your 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 with a factory 7-Way connector, the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195 along with the Plug-In Adapter # 3020-P will work perfectly. This is a fantastic brake controller that will apply the brakes on your trailer at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your tow vehicle. It features an easy to ready digital display and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. The Plug-In Adapter will connect to the controller at one end and directly to the built-in port beneath the dash of your Ram at the other end.

Your 2004 Monaco Diplomat Motor Home is built on the Roadmaster chassis. We do not currently have a Plug-In Adapter available that is designed to work on this motor home so the same adapter you use for your Dodge Ram will not work. Since the wiring is already ran to the rear of the motor home, you will just need to hardwire the controller using the included pigtail harness. There should be a blue wire beneath the dash area that will connect to the brake output wire (also blue) on the Prodigy P3.

The red wire from the brake controller is the stoplight switch wire that will need to be run to the stoplight circuit of the Monaco. This circuit is found by locating the wire that only sees voltage when the brakes are applied and none when the brakes are not. The white wire from the controller will run to the negative side of the battery and the black wire will go to the positive side of the battery through a circuit breaker like # PK54530.

I am not sure what brake controller is already installed in the motor home but you can certainly use this if you wish instead of the Prodigy P3. If you are able to send me a picture of the controller, or can locate the manufacturer or model, I will be happy to tell you a little bit more about it and offer any suggestions.
