Parts Needed to Install a Brake Controller on a 2000 Toyota Tundra with Tow Package

Question:

I noticed that the HM47815 is listed as a Toyota wiring adapter, but specifies 2003-2011 Tundras. I have a 2000 Tundra with a factory tow package. Is this adapter compatable with it?

For a 2000 to 2002 Toyota Tundra, you will not be able to use the Hopkins Plug-in Simple Brake Wiring Adapter, # HM47815. As you have stated, it fits 2003 to 2011 models. Of the manufacturers we carry, none offer a brake controller wiring harness that will fit the 2000 Tundra.

If the truck already has a 7-Way trailer connector, you will need to hardwire an installation kit for a brake controller using wire # 10-1-1, and a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker (see brake controller instructions for what size to use). The wire is sold in increments of 1 foot, I recommend 25 feet so you would put 25 in the quantity box.

At the back of the 7-Way, find the wire for brake out put. It will be attached to the pin in the 7 oclock position if looking at the back of the plug where the wires are attached. If you can, remove the wire that is already attached and tape it up with electrical tape, then attach the 10-1-1 wire to the now empty pin. Or, you can cut the wire behind the plug, attach the 10-1-1 wire to the end attached to the plug, and tape up the loose end.

You will then route the wire under the truck, avoiding areas that may pinch or burn the wire, and into the cab of the truck where it will attach to the blue wire from the back of a brake controller. You should have some left over wire which will be needed to make the rest of the connections.

You will need to connect a length or wire to go from the white wire on the brake controller to the negative battery terminal. The black wire on the brake controller will need to go to the positive battery terminal via a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker (# PK54520 and # PK54530, respectively).

The last connection is the brake controller red wire. Using a circuit tester like # PTW2993, locate the wire on the brake switch above the brake pedal that carries a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed. If the wire has a signal at any other time, like when the headlights are on or the turns signals are engaged, it is not the correct wire.

For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up and easy to use. I have incldued a link to the installation details for you to view.
