Recommended Brake Assemblies and Replacement Hub Assembly for 2004 Fleetwood Terry Travel Trailer

Question:

I have 2004, 28foot Fleetwood Terry travel trailer. A couple weeks ago the right rear grease cap came off, spun out the grease, melted the bearings and races and the hub caught fire. While replacing the 10x2 1/4 brake assembly I thought I needed a right side brake but it had a left side installed. The dealer told me the brake was installed incorrectly. I looked at the other three brakes and it appears all are on the wrong side. No work, other the greasing the bearings has occurred since I bought the camper new in 2004. I also noticed the wires coming out of the two axels are on the front side which matches the side the wires go into the brake. I never had a problem with the brakes or stopping the trailer. Id estimate its been towed about 30,000 miles before this incident. Have you heard of this before and how worried should I be that the axles and brakes are backwards?

The brake assemblies installed backwards will still work, just not quite as well. There is a shorter shoe on the front side of the brake assembly and the magnet may not function as well because of the rotation of the tire. Since you are in there, I recommend switching them out.

It sounds like you haven't adjusted them manually in the 30K miles, so I recommend you go with the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA which will adjust automatically as you drive to give you proper braking. These assemblies will be labeled left (driver's side) and right (passenger side).

As long as you spindles were not damaged in the incident, I recommend the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 # AKHD-545-35-K to replace your hub and bearings.
