Adding a Trailer Wiring Harness to a 2002 Dodge Durango to Tow a 1996 Jayco Trailer

Question:

I have a 2002 Dodge Durango no tow package and a 1996 Jayco 1207. I want to get them hooked up so that the 3-way fridge can draw power from the Durango battery in transit. What is the appropriate kit for me to wire the Durango to accept a 6-way connection from the trailer? What are the correct parts to hook up the trailer with a 6-way square socket on the frame to the Durango? I had the same concerns expressed by other users on the wire guage of part # 37995, so I am not opposed to rewiring the trailer if necessary. Im just looking to do this correctly the first time to avoid complications down the road. Thanks

We can get you set up to tow your Jayco trailer with the 6-Way connector. First, on your 2002 Dodge Durango, you will need to install Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118334. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to a video showing a typical installation for you to view.

The 6-Way square plug is a rarity. What I recommend is replacing the 6-Way on the trailer with a 7-Way RV style connector. It will be fairly simple. You will just need a 7-Way connector, # PK12706, clip off the 6-way square plug on the trailer, then connect the wires to the new 7-Way as follows:

If looking at the back of the connector where the wires attach;

Center pin will not be used
1 oclock position = 12 volt power
3 oclock position = right turn and brake lights
5 oclock position = output to electric trailer brakes
7 oclock position = ground
9 oclock position = left turn and brake
11 oclock position = tail lights

Once that is finished, you will just have to set up the vehicle with a 7-Way using a 4 and 7 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. Plug in the 4-Way, installed earlier, to the back of the ETBC7 and then there are just a few remaining connections. Ground the white wire to the vehicle frame. The purple wire can be taped up and stowed out of the way. If you do not have electric brakes or do not want to use them, the blue wire can also be taped up and stowed out of the way.

The last connection is the black wire for 12 volt power. It will need to be connected to the vehicle battery via a 40 amp circuit breaker included in the kit. I have added some links that will help with this installation and help if you decide to add a brake controller. If you do want a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885 because it is easy to set up and easy to use.
