Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2016 Ford Escape

We are looking for a bike rack to put on the back of a ford escape 2016. We are looking for one that uses a hitch rather than straps that can hold 2 bikes. If possible one that the trunk door can still open but am not sure that would be possible. Please can you recommend? We also need the hitch part that we would get fitted. Thanks!

I can help you get exactly what you need, including a rack that will allow you to open the trunk on your 2016 Ford Escape. The hitch I recommend for you is the Draw-Tite # 75782; this is a Class III, 2" hitch that is going to give you the most options for a high-quality bike rack. This hitch will still allow you to use the hands-free liftgate option on your Escape, though you may have to kick just to the side of the receiver tube. I've added a link showing this hitch being installed on an Escape for you to take a look at.

As for a bike rack, you have a number of options based on your desired features, such as opening your trunk; I also recommend a rack with built-in locks to protect your investments. A top of the line rack that is one of our most popular is the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 # SH22G. This is a platform rack that has a weight capacity of 40 lbs per bike, and measures 14" between bikes so there will be absolutely no contact between them as you drive. It folds up for easy storage and can tilt away so you have access to the trunk of your '16 Escape even if the bikes loaded, which you can see in the attached photo of the Sherpa on the gray SUV.

It uses ratcheting hooks that grip your bikes by the wheels and the rear wheel holders have straps so there is no contact between your bike frame and the rack. The hooks are extremely easy to maneuver; you can change their position with just the push of a button. The Sherpa also has tool-free installation as you need only turn a knob to tighten the rack in your hitch. It also comes with a hitch lock to secure the rack to your Escape and cable lock to secure your bikes to the rack, along with three keys which are keyed alike for your convenience.
