Trailer Brake Controller Installation in 2003 GMC Safari Van

Question:

I have looked through your website but hasnt found a video specific to my 2003 GMC Safari cargo van for complete installation of a electric brake controller. If there is no video specific to my vehicle, can you direct me to the most relevant one?

The installation of a trailer brake controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885 in a 2003 GMC Safari van and the parts needed will depend on how it is equipped.

If the van has a factory-installed 7-way trailer connector you may be able to find a pre-installed blue wire (for the controller's output signal to the 7-way) that will be under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. This will connect to the controller's blue wire.

If your truck has a round plug with a cap inside the driver's side frame rail instead of a bundle of wires in the jack storage compartment, use part # 30955.

Vans without the factory 7-way will need a 4-pole wiring harness # 118392 along with brake controller install kit # ETBC7.

Either way the four wires of any brake controller will connect as follows:

RED wire connects to cold side of brake light switch (that carries voltage ONLY when you press the brake pedal).

WHITE wire is ground and is routed to battery negative terminal.

BLACK wire delivers 12V operating power to the controller and connects through a circuit breaker to the battery positive terminal.

BLUE output wire connects to the factory blue wire if present, or to the wire included in the ETBC7 kit.

The linked articles cover the whole process of hardwiring a controller. This will apply to any vehicle; just some of the specifics will vary from one to another.
