Options for Mating 4-Pole Flat Vehicle Wiring to Jayco 6-Pole Square Trailer Wiring

Question:

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer and a 1988 Jayco camper trailer. With this harness will I be able to charge the 12volt battery that is in my camper trailer? If not, do you have any suggestions how I can wire it so that I have the accessories working and able to charge my 12volt battery? Also are there any other functions I will be losing converter the 6 Prong Jayco harness to a 4 prong straight?

The 4-pole to 6-Pole Jayco wiring adapter 30104 supports only the 3 circuits on the 4-pole but converts them to the connector format used on older Jayco trailers. A 4-pole wiring setup has a ground and three circuits; right stop/turn, left stop/turn and tail lights. The Jayco connector has a ground and 5 circuits so using this adapter would let the basic lighting signals from the Explorer's 4-pole reach the trailer but the other functions supported by the Jayco plug would NOT have any signal.

The least-costly way to get 12V power to the trailer connector is to run a length of 10-gauge wire # 10-1-1 from the battery + terminal, through a 40-amp breaker # PK54540 and on to the wire in the trailer's plug that runs to the trailer battery. You'll need ring terminals # 44-5310A. On the trailer's connector you'll need to determine which wire carries 12V power to the trailer battery and splice the 10-gauge wire to that. Then the battery will receive a trickle or maintenance charge as you drive.

Please note that this 12V power feed cannot re-charge a depleted battery; it can only maintain a charged battery. Actual charging needs to come from a shore-power charger like # CTEK56353. I own one of these and mine has worked perfectly during non-stop 24/7/365 operation for almost 4 years.

The other option is to convert the Explorer and trailer to the modern 7-way wiring configuration. To do this on the vehicle you need only kit # ETBC7. This kit has every part needed to install and connect the included 7-way socket which will carry 12V trailer power on the pin at the 1-o-clock position as you view the socket (see photo please). On the trailer you could use 7-way junction box # HS381-9000 to wire in the leads from the trailer's existing wiring to the appropriate terminals inside the box. You will again need ring terminals for the wires on the trailer.
