Installing the Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller, # 39510, on your 1998 Ford Explorer will not be too difficult and we have numerous resources for the installation that will be very helpful. First, to install a brake controller on your vehicle you will need three things. First, a 4-Way trailer connector if the Explorer does not already have one. For your truck, it is # 118345. I have included a link to the installation details for reference.
Next, you will need a 4 and 7-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This provides a 7-Way and 4-Way connector at the back of the vehicle, all the wiring needed to install it and to wire a brake controller, and the circuit breakers needed to power the 7-Way and brake controller. I have included links to 2 FAQ articles on the installation of an ETBC7 and a video showing a typical installation.
Last, you will need the brake controller, which you already have, and you will probably want Brake Control Plug-In Harness, # 20127. The only additional part you will need is a circuit tester, # PTW2993, if you do not already have one.
