Weight Distribution Versus Helper Springs for 2008 Toyota Tundra

Question:

Do air helper springs distribute the load between both front and rear axles like weight distribution hitch?

Expert Reply:

Helper and air springs primarily work with loads on the vehicle itself, while weight distribution will use leverage provided by the spring bars to transfer a portion of a trailers tongue weight from the rear axle to the front axle. Using a weight distribution system is typically called for when the weight of the trailer plus the load on it weighs 50 percent or more of the weight of the tow vehicle. A weight distribution system can improve braking, handling and steering response as well as eliminating the squat experienced when a trailer is connected to the vehicle.

Using a helper spring system is primarily called for when heavy loads are frequently carried in the bed of the truck or heavy weights like a snow plow are applied to the front of the vehicle. While helper or air springs can eliminate the squat experienced with a heavy trailer, they will not distribute any weight to the front axle.
