Brake Controller and Trailer Break-Away Kit Recommendations for a 1996 Dodge Dakota

Question:

Im looking for a proportional brake controller for my 1996 Dodge Dakota 4x club cab. Ill be towing a 3,000 pound single axle trailer. Ive never hooked up a brake controller, so Im hoping for advice on vehicle-specific instructions if you have them for any of the controllers. With my order, Ill also be placing an order for quite a few side and clearance LED lights, as well as a breakaway kit. The breakaway kit Im looking for would be for a dexter torsion spring axle, rated at 3,500 pounds. Thanks.

I can certainly help you out with choosing a brake controller, installation, and finding the right break-away kit for your needs. First, the 1996 Dodge Dakota did not come with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector. So you will need to add one. The easiest way to install a 7-Way would be to first install a 4-Way flat if the truck does not already have one. You would need part # 118329. I have included a link to the installation details and a video showing a typical installation.

With a 4-Way installed, you would then need a 4 and 7-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This provides a 7-Way trailer connector at the back of the truck and all of the wiring and circuit breakers needed for a brake controller installation. The ETBC7 is a universal hardwire kit, so there are no vehicle specific installation details because it is basically the same on every vehicle.

I have included links to FAQ articles and a video showing a typical installation for you to view. These 3 links have all of the information you will need to install a brake controller. You will also need a circuit tester, # PTW2993, if you do not already have one. The only other part you will need is the brake controller itself. Brake controllers are not vehicle specific so you can use any of the ones we carry.

I do recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up and easy to use. I have included a link to the installation details for the brake controller for reference along with a link on brake controller information.

For a break-away kit, I recommend the Tow Ready Trailer Break Away Kit With Built-In Tester and Battery Charger, # 50-85-315. This is a step above a plain break-away kit because it has a handy tester and built-in charger.
