Adding Electric Trailer brakes to 3500 lb Lippert Axle on Aluma Edge Trailer
Question:
I would like to add a complete braking system to my Aluma Edge trailer. I called and verified my trailer shipped with a Lippert 3500lb axle. What part will be needed to add the electric brakes, drums, breakaway box and plug? Is there a complete kit?

We have everything that you will need to add electric brakes to your trailer that has a 3,500 lbs axle. It doesn't come in a complete kit but I will list the parts that you will need.
A Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35 will need to be welded onto the spindle so that the brake assembly can be installed on the axle.
The next step would be to install the brake assemblies. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA will work with 3,500 lbs axles and measures 10"x 2-1/4". These assemblies will work with 13", 14", and 15" wheel sizes. You will also need Mounting Hardware # BRKH10B for the installation.
The one piece of equipment that you will have to verify that is a fit is the hub and drum assembly. Although the Dexter Axle Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 84546UC3 is most likely the correct fit, you will want to make sure that your current spindle uses an Inner Bearing # L68149, and Outer Bearing # L44649, and the Grease Seal # 58846 which has an Inner Diameter of 1.719". You will also want to make sure that your wheels have the common 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.
From here you will need to add a 7-Way to your trailer. I recommend using the 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box # HS381-9000 to make this easier. You will simply need to cut off the 4-Pole that should already be installed for your trailer lighting and use the included ring Terminals for your connections. To run power to your brakes you will need 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 and some Butt Connectors # DW05745-10. You can use that same wire for you 12V power.
The last thing that you will need on your trailer is a breakaway kit like the Tekonsha Breakaway Kit with Charger, Clamp On # 2028 which will activate your trailer's brakes should it come uncoupled and the safety chains fail.
If you do not have a brake controller already installed in your tow vehicle I recommend using the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. If you let me know what the year/make/model of your tow vehicle is and what (if any) kind of wiring setup it already has I will be happy to help you get this side of your setup ready to go as well.
I have attached some helpful articles on wiring that you can reference as well.
