Is a Controller Needed for Electrical Towing Hook Ups When Towing with a 2011 Subaru
Question:
I just had a trailer hitch installed on my 2011 Subaru and also had the electrical wiring set up. But, do I need a controller for the driver to control the electrical? I plan to tow a pop-up camper trailer?

If your pop-up camper trailer has a 4 wire trailer connector only without electric brakes then you will not need any other wiring or controls for the trailer lights. The vehicle lighting will activate the trailer lights in unison.
If your pop-up camper trailer has electric brakes, you will need an electric brake controller and a electric brake wiring kit. I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, item # 90885, along with the Electric Trailer Brake Controller installation Kit, item # ETBC7. We have detailed instructions online, see link, and this kit includes all of the wiring and connectors needed to complete a professional looking installation.
I have also included a video installation you should find very helpful if you are installing a brake controller on your Subaru.
