For your 2001 VW New Beetle Turbo, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch # 24679. This Class I hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and has a 2,000 pound towing weight capacity with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I also recommend checking your copy of the owner's manual for the vehicle's specific towing capacity, as it may differ from the trailer hitch. You will need to follow the lower of the two capacities.
I have attached the installation details for you to take a look at.
Then to install a 4-Way connector needed to power a trailer's signal lights, I recommend the Tekonsha Wiring Harness # 119178KIT. This is a universal hardwire kit that includes a circuit tester and quick splices to aid in installation. I have again attached the installation instructions for you to check out.
You will also need a ball mount like the Draw-Tite Drawbar # 3593 and hitch ball such as the 2 inch # 19258 or 1-7/8 inch # 19256. This ball mount features a 2-1/8 inch rise or a 2-3/4 inch drop. If the rise or drop on this ball mount is not sufficient to tow your trailer level, I have attached an article that explains how to measure for the correct ball mount along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
