Cooling Options For Chevy Express 3500 When Towing a 30 Foot Travel Trailer
Question:
pulling a 30 travel trailer with a Chevy Express 3500. I have added an auxiliary transmission cooler, but want to address high temps when pulling hills. Looking at adding a pusher fan in addition to belt fan. Is this an effective option? Are there better ways? Thanks

Since you have already added an aftermarket transmission cooler to your Chevy Express 3500, you can make sure you have it mounted in the most efficient location for cooling. The ideal place to mount an aftermarket transmission cooler is behind the front grille but in front of the radiator of your vehicle.
Adding an electric fan like the item you selected, Derale Radiator Fans, part # D16834, will help reduce engine temperatures and would be a good option. You will need to measure to make sure part # D16834 will fit in your engine bay, as the fan assembly is 31-3/4 inches wide by 15-5/8 inches tall and is 1-3/4 inches thick. The fans will mount behind the radiator, between the engine and radiator.
To control the fans, you can activate the fans off of a switch using Derale Lighted On/Off Switch, part # D16740, or by using a thermostat control like the Derale Thermostat Fan Control, part # D16735. Using a thermostat will activate the fans when the temperature exceeds 180 degrees. Personally, I would go with a switch for simplicity and you know when the fan will be on or off by your control.
In addition to adding coolers and fans, changing your oil, transmission fluid and coolant and making sure the fluid levels are correct as outlined in your owners manual is recommended. There are also coolant additives that are available to help keep the coolant temperature a bit cooler. In addition you also want to make sure to stay within the towing limits of the vehicle.
I have linked an FAQ on electric fans and an FAQ on radiator fans that you may find as a good reference.
