Adding a Brake Controller and 7-Way Connector to a 2012 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Hello, I am considering install C56217 wiring harness for my 2012 toyota highlander. However, if I want to add Tekonsha TK90160 on top of that. Is there any way I can connect the brake controller to 10 pin connector under the dash that is being used by converter box? Or should I get rid of the converter box and use just C56042 cable only with the brake controller?

In order to install a brake controller on your 2012 Toyota Highlander you will need a few different parts. First, you will need to install a 4-Way trailer wiring harness. I actually recommend T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118449 because it has proven more reliable than other options and costs a bit less. A brake controller cannot tie into this harness or any of the others for your Highlander.
After the 4-Way is installed you will need to install Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires Item # ETBC7. This will add the 7-Way trailer connector and the wiring needed to hardwire in a brake controller so you will be able to install Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional Item # TK90160.
I have included some links to videos and help articles that cover the various parts of the installation.
