Can 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Electric Brakes Replace 10 x 1-1/2 Inch Assemblies on Dexter 2.8K Axle

Question:

I have a 1998 Terry 24LZ travel trailer with Dexter 2.8 axles and 10X1.5 brakes. Can I upgrade to the 10X2.25 brakes and 10x2.25 drums/hubs?

You may be able to replace the 10 x 1-1/2 inch electric brakes on your trailer with the more common sized 10 x 2-1/4 inch assemblies.

The potential issue is the Dexter 2.8K axle that your existing electric brakes are mounted to. This particular axle normally has the brakes welded onto it. This means that the assemblies cannot be outright replaced and you can only get replacement parts, such as the Electric Brake Shoe # BP04-065.

However, if the axle on your 1998 Terry Travel Trailer happens not to be the original part and was manufactured after September of 1999 and the brakes are actually bolted to the axle rather than welded, you can use 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes as a replacement. You will just need to make sure that the drum width where the pads make contact are at least 2-1/4 inches wide.

If the brakes on your axles are in fact welded on, then another option is to replace the axle altogether. We do not currently have 2.8K axles available but these can be ordered locally at a local tractor or trailer supply shop.
