If your 2004 Nissan Xterra does not have the factory 4-flat connector at the rear of the vehicle, you will first need to install the Tekonsha Circuit Protected Tail Light Converter Hardwire Kit # 119178KIT. This is a hardwire kit that will provide a 4-way connector on your Xterra. It includes a circuit tester and quick splices to help with the installation.
Then to get a fully functional 7-Way along with the 4-Way, you will want the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. The kit includes all of the wiring necessary to install a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that will easily mount at the rear of your vehicle with the provided bracket. I have attached an article that details the installation steps for this particular kit that you might find helpful.
If you also need a brake controller to control the electric brakes on your trailer, I highly recommend looking at the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is an excellent proportional controller that will activate your trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Xterra. It features an easy-to-read digital display along with continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues.
The prices for the mentioned products will be listed on their individual product pages.
I have also included a couple of additional articles on wiring and trailer brake controllers for you to look through.
