Troubleshooting Brake Controller Showing Volts Without Brake Pedal Applied

Question:

2007 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD new body style I have had the Prodigy P2 installed on this truck for about 2 months. Recently the brake controller has been showing volts when the brake pedal is not being pressedwhile trailer is connected. Sometimes throughout the drive the controller does work properly shows a C for connected but then randomly shows low volts while no brake pedal is being pressed. If I raise the volts on the controller when a heavy load is present then the amount of volts is higher when no brake is being pressed. Any ideas of what it can be? Somebody told me make my tucks brake switch is getting stuck which may be causing the controller to show volts with no brake? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

It sounds like there is a small draw on your brakes that is causing that reading. This could be from the brake light switch or it could be from the trailer. Since it isn't happening consistently, I recommend checking the ground wires on your trailer at your brakes. If there is any corrosion or debris, this could cause a slight reading like this. Make sure you have a clean metal on metal connection. I also recommend cleaning your connection points on your truck and trailer and then add some dielectric grease # 11755 to those connection points to give you a better signal and keep moisture and debris out.
