Upgrading a 12K Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System to a 14K

Question:

I have a couple of questions regarding the equalizer weight distribution hitches. I currently have the 12K version and Im not getting the leveling capability out of it that I am hoping for. My new trailer tongue weight is slightly over 1,200 so Im thinking about going up to the 14K version. What is different between these models? Is it just the head? Are the bars the same dimensions? Finally, do you have a 14K package that includes the 2.5inch shank? I see the model that has no shank Model EQ37141ET but it is priced only slightly less than this model with the 2inch shank. I recognize I can buy that one and the 2.5inch shank separately but it will cost quite a bit more. Ive read on some forums that using the weight distribution hitches with the 2.5-2inch reducer sleeve will impact the effectiveness of the WD capabilities. Thanks in Advance!

There area few differences between the 1,200 and 1,400 pound Equal-I-zer systems. The heads are different and the spring bars are different. If your tongue weight is over 1,200 pound then the 1,200 pound system is not rated high enough. When calculating tongue weight for weight distribution you go by the total tongue weight. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. So at the very least the 1,400 pound system should be used.

There isn't a 1,400 pound system that comes with the 2-1/2 inch shank so you would need to use # EQ37141ET with a 2-1/2 inch shank such as # EQ90-02-4900. You can reuse the ball that you have though.

Another option is to replace the head and spring bars only and get the 2-1/2 inch shank. A pair of 1,400 pound bars are # EQ90-01-1499. The 1,400 pound head is # EQ90-02-1400. It will save you some money but if it were me I would go ahead and replace everything by getting a new kit and offset the cost by selling the old system.
