Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver, Wiring, And Ball Mount For 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan
Question:
I have a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan with seats. I need to install a hitch hook up to pull a horse and trailer whose combined weight will be ~3850#. is this even a safe weight to pull with this van? and what hitch system would you recommend?

Expert Reply:
For your 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan, a horse trailer with combined weight of 3,850 lbs is not going to be compatible. The towing capacity of your vehicle according to the manufacturer is maxed out at 3,600 lbs. There is a hitch rated for this capacity, but that will not change the capacity max of your vehicle. If you can get the weight down by 250 lbs, then I have some recommendations for you.
I then recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75579. this is a bolt on installation that has a sturdy, square tube design.
For your wiring, I recommend the Curt Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56331. This will connect behind your tail lights and draw power directly from your battery to keep your factory wiring from overload. I've attached an article to help with running that power wire to the converter.
For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 7.5K - Black # BWTS10038B. This ball mount is adjustable to allow you to tow level. It has two hitch ball options of 1-7/8 inch or 2 inches. It also has a really nice stowable feature that gives you a clean look when not in use and also protects your shins when loading and unloading cargo. I recommend using a locking pin like # BX8858 to protect your investment.
If you have any further questions please feel free to reach back out to me anytime and I would be more than happy to further assist you in your future towing endeavors.
