Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2013 Honda CR-V

Question:

I am looking for a trailer hitch for my 2013 Honda CR V. The specs say the capacity is 1,500 and tongue weight is 10. Is there a trailer hitch out there that would work for me? I am looking to tow a small boat, but all the hitches I have found are 200lbs or more. Looking for recommendations. Thanks.

Going with a trailer hitch that has a higher towing and tongue weight capacity than your 2013 Honda CR-V is not going to affect the vehicle's ability to tow a boat trailer like what you are wanting to do. A Class III trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite # 75742, which is what I recommend for your vehicle, has itself a towing capacity of 4,500 pounds and a tongue weight capacity of 675 pounds. You do not need to find a trailer hitch that matches up with the towing capacities of the vehicle.

The reason I recommend going with a Class III trailer hitch, even though you still will not be able to exceed the CR-V's 1,500 pound towing capacity, is because of the 2 inch receiver that it provides. A 2 inch receiver, as opposed to a 1-1/4 inch receiver that lower capacity hitches have, will allow for many more hitch mounted accessory options like bike racks and cargo carriers if you ever decide to use one. A stronger hitch than what is needed is also not going to cause any harm, but will help to provide a sturdier unit on your vehicle when towing a trailer.

I have attached an installation video for this trailer hitch on your 2013 Honda CR-V for you to check out.

For wiring, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118561. This will install a 4-way connector needed to power your trailer's signal lights and will simply plug into existing wiring behind the driver and passenger side tail lights on your vehicle.

Then for a ball mount, I recommend looking at the Curt Class III Ball Mount with 2 Inch Ball # C45036 with a 2 inch drop. I have also included an article on choosing the best ball mount for your setup if this one does not work. I have also attached a couple articles on towing a trailer that you may find helpful.
