Recommended Roof Basket and Cargo Bag for 2016 Toyota Highlander

Question:

From what I have read - we should not put a cargo bag directly on the glass roof. Everyone says get a cargo rack basket. We have factory cross bars. What roof cargo rack would be best to go with a thule bag we seem to like thule bags from reviews - is there another that is good?. I want some thing easy to install and take off, light and works with toyota. Thank you

For a roof basket to mount onto the factory crossbars of your 2016 Toyota Highlander, I highly recommend the Rhino-Rack Roof Mounted Steel Cargo Basket # RMCB. This is a great, heavy-duty steel cargo basket that will provide a weight capacity of 165 pounds. It will fit with the factory crossbars on your Highlander as long as they are no wider than 3-1/2 inches or more than 1-1/2 inches in height. It also needs a crossbar spread (distance between the two crossbars) of 21 to 30 inches. This basket also includes a fairing which will help to reduce wind noise and drag when traveling.

I have attached a video demonstration on this basket for you to check out.

Then, once the basket is mounted to the roof of your vehicle, a roof bag like the Thule Interstate Rooftop Cargo Bag # TH869 is a great choice. This bag will give you 16 cubic feet of space and can be secured to the basket using the built-in straps. I have attached a demonstration on this product for you to view as well.

As you mentioned in your question, we highly advise against placing roof cargo bags directly on top of glass sunroofs. Other than the cosmetic scratches and smudges that this may lead to on the glass, sunroofs are just not designed to support the full weight of a loaded basket so it may also be unsafe.
