Why Is Trailer Suspension Shackle Angled and Not Totally Vertical
Question:
Im in the process of rebuilding a single axle trailer with 3500 pound axle. Basically only saving the axle and replacing all hardware. What is the best location for the shackle? Hanging straight down, or angled back? I have also considered adding an axle to make it tandem. Would that be suggested to be done with a used axle? Simply considering to make it ride a little better. Landscape trailer, 12ft if single, 14 if tandem. Thanks!

You'll want the shackle hanging at a slight angle so that it doesn't want to flip upside down at any point. If it's totally vertical it will want to flip over much easier.
Adding an axle certainly could be done while still using the old axle. It would be a matter of getting a tandem hanger kit like part # APT3 with the new axle.
