Recommended Towing Setup For 2016 Mazda CX-5 With Brake Controller For Trailer With Brakes
Question:
I am trying to figure out exactly what we need to make a 2016 Mazda CX-5 tow a trailer. Were renting a trailer for a weekend basically an Aliner Scout Ive been looking at Curt brand hitches and it looks like I need a hitch, 2x2inch receiver with ball, lock. Then I find out Ill also need wiring harness for brake lights etc. The trailer has electric brakes so do we also need a brake controller? Does this also need all the standard harness, wiring connectors, etc? Could use some help figuring this out, thanks.

For your 2016 Mazda CX-5, I'm happy to help. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13315. This is an easy bolt on application that has a gloss black powder coat over a protective base coat for rust resistance. For this hitch I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 10K - Black # BWTS10037B. This ball mount is adjustable to ensure you have the right fit to tow your trailer level. It also comes with two hitch ball options of 2 inch and 2-5/16 inches which are standard trailer coupler sizes. This ball mount also has a really nice stowable feature that allows you to have a clean look and protect your shins when loading and unloading cargo when the hitch is not in use. I recommend using the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock - Stainless Steel Flush Design for 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98882 to protect your investment.
For your wiring, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118563 which connects easily to your factory wiring connections found in the rear cargo area. This ModuLite will make sure your vehicle wiring will work with your trailer and requires a power wire from the battery to protect your factory wiring from overload.
You will use this wiring harness along with the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7 to get your vehicle wired for towing a trailer with brakes. This will require some hardwiring and I've attached videos as well as an article to assist. This is not a difficult install, but will require routing cable to the battery just like the 4-way harness.
The final thing you need is a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195, because this brake controller is easy to use and understand. It has an LCD screen that takes the code deciphering of most brake controllers out of the equation. It is customizable and has 3 levels of boost.
