Replacing a 6-Way Trailer Connector that Only Uses 4 Functions with a 7-Way

can i upgrade my existing old 6 pin round to newer 7 way if the older vehicle only has 4 wires?

To connect a 7-way trailer connector like # H20043 to your trailer you'll need to cut off the existing 6-way and then find out the function of each of the wire. They should be ground, running lights, left turn signal and brake, and right turn signal and brake. You'll need to trace each wire back to where it terminates or connect each wire to 12 volt power to find each function.
Then connect the 7-way by function, I've attached a help article that gives the details on a 7-way connector. If you don't need the extra wires on the # H20043 they can be capped off. If you're going to add the other circuits from the 7-way you can use # 10-1-1, which is sold by the foot to run the wiring.
Or you can use # e99011 that has a junction box to make the connections easier. In this case you'll also need ring terminals # 44-5310A.
