What Type Of Clip Is Used To Attach The Cable Of Hopkins Breakaway Kit # 20099 To The Vehicle

Question:

What is the pulling strength of the cable used in this breakaway system? Do you have any recommendations as to a clip to use on the lanyard to attach it to bumper, frame, etc.?

The Hopkins Trailer Breakaway Kit, part # 20099, does require a pretty good pull on the cable for it to come out of the breakaway switch. It is designed to be able to be pulled out when the trailer becomes disconnected from the vehicle, but not when there is just a light pull from any small object that might interfere with the cable. They do not list a pulling strength on the cable of the breakaway kit.

Many people just put the cable through the safety chain loop on the hitch and then run the pin through the small loop in the end of the cable. This secures the cable to the hitch and no other parts are needed. In this configuration you need to mount the switch close enough to the coupler to make the connection.

If you are wanting to use a connector it should be capable of pulling the pin from the switch at any reasonable angle. You will also want it to be secure enough that you will not lose the cable and pin in the unfortunate event of a breakaway. The Curt Quick Link, part # C82931, is a connector that we recommend and would be plenty strong for attaching the safety cable to the vehicle.

I am including a video link of the Tow ready breakaway kit being installed on a trailer.
