Will A Higher Rated Towing Capacity On A Trailer Hitch Receiver Increase My Vehicle Capacity?

Question:

Good Afternoon, I own a 2004 Toyota 4Runner with the V6 motor. Tow capacity is 5,000 lbs. I was curious, if I install the trailer hitch part number 75155 which is rated up to 6,000 pounds...could I tow 6,000 pounds with my 4Runner? I love my SUV but the 5,000 pound limit is limiting me on buying a camping trailer which I do plan to use a load balancing hitch too with. Thank you. Respectfully

Expert Reply:

Your manufacturer's rating for towing capacity will be the max capacity even if the hitch rating is higher like is the case with your 2004 Toyota 4 Runner and the Draw Tite Hitch # 75155. There are other components that are factored into the towing capacity of a vehicle besides the hitch itself. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but a hitch rating doesn't increase the capacity of your vehicle.
