Parts Needed to Add Brakes to Lippert 3500lb Axle on an Utility Trailer

Question:

I have a 6.5x10foot dove tail custom utility trailer that I haul a compact tractor, buggies, etc. on. Id like to add brakes to it. My truck is already equipped with the factory brake controller and 7 pin connector. I use it regularly for my travel trailer. The last year the trailer has sat outside which has taken its toll. I plan to strip it and put on a quality paint or powdercoat during the brake addition.

We have the parts that you will need to add brakes to you Lippert 3,500lbs axles.

For the brake assemblies, I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit, # AKEBRK-35-SA. This kit includes both the left and right brake assemblies and will bolt right to your 4 hole brake flange that is already on your axle. The brakes are self-adjustable and will only need an initial set-up at installation.

The drums that you will most likely need will be # AKHD-545-35-K. This drum will include bearings, seal, new lugs and a dust cap. You will need to check the bearing numbers of your current bearing to match with the bearings listed in the kit. If you cannot find these numbers, the attached picture will show you what measurements are needed to find your correct bearings.

I also recommend using # L11465 Disc/Drum and Wheel Bearing Grease to pack your bearing at installation. If you have a grease gun, like # L30200, then you can use the Deluxe Bearing Packer, # L70025, to pack your wheel bearings. Using a bearing packer makes the job faster and cleaner then packing your wheel bearings by hand.

You will also need to wire your brakes and install a 7-way plug to connect to your vehicle. You can uses # 10-2-1 Deka 2 Wire 10 gauge Brake Wire to wire the brake magnets. This sold by the foot and is jacketed to help protect the wiring from the elements.

You will need a Hopkins 7-Way Plug, # H20046, to wire your lights and brakes together and be able to connect to your vehicles 7-way connector. You will also need # DW05745-10 butt connectors to make all the electrical connections for your brake and light wiring. The butt connectors come in a pack of 10 and will work with 10-12 gauge wire.
