Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with Brakes Using a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer with Factory 4-Way
Question:
I currently have a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer with a class 2 hitch and standard 4 pin trailer harness. What is the quickest way to convert to a 7 pin harness with a brake controller. I think I have a broken wire from my 4 pin back to the harness do they make a 7 pin that plugs into the factory pig tail. Will I be able to you the P-3035 brake controller harness with my vehicle?

Expert Reply:
The only 7-way trailer harnesses that plug directly into your 2002 Mercury Mountaineer are direct replacements if you have a factory 7-way. Since you have the 4-way you won't be able to use a replacement 7-way but part of the work is already finished. What you'll use is the 4-way to 7-way harness, part # 37185. This connects to your existing 4-way and has the additional wire leads for brake, power, and accessory. If you need additional wiring you can use 10 guage wire # 10-1-1 which is sold by the foot.
If you need to replace your existing 4-way connector you can use the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow # HM11140335.
For a brake controller I suggest the Prodigy P2 # 90885 because of its reliability and ease of use. This will need to be hardwired into your vehicle. The # 3035-P will only work with Mountaineers that have a factory 7-way.
