Question:

I would like to add electric brakes to our pop up trailer and I was wondering if I could get some help with the right electric brakes and parts that I need to to order for it. Here are a few items from the owners manual that I hope can help narrowing down the brakes and parts: 1 Axle Assembly: 4741G6301 2 axle Beam: 4147F6251 3 Bearings: 4716-1101 4 wheel Assembly: 4754B0531 Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks for giving us the numbers you provided for your 1999 Coleman Destiny Series 3369 Santee Pop-Up camper. Based on the bearings we can determine the correct parts to add electric brakes to your trailer.

The components needed to add electric brakes to a trailer are an electric brake compatible hub and drum, brake assemblies, a brake mounting flange, trailer wiring, a breakaway kit, and a brake controller.

Based on the bearing numbers you gave me, the bearing numbers that match are L44649. This is for both the inner and outer bearing used on the axle. For a hub and drum assembly that is compatible I recommend the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # AKHD-545-2-2K. This includes one hub and drum assembly. The hub and drum assembly has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern and is designed for axles with a 2,000 pound weight capacity.

For brake assemblies I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Assembly 7 Inch, Left Hand part # AKEBRK-2L and Right-Hand part # AKEBRK-2R. These brake assemblies will work well with the # AKHD-545-2-2K hub and drum and are designed for a 2,000 pound axle.

If your trailer axle does not have a brake mounting flange, you can use # 4-34 to provide one. This will need to be welded to the trailer axle by a qualified welded.

For trailer wiring, I recommend using the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit # HS381-9000. This kit will provide you with a 7-way connector for your trailer, a junction box to make the connections between the trailer connector and your trailer's wiring, and the hardware needed to make the connections. To run the wire from the junction box to the brakes you can use the Deka Jacketed 2 Wire # 10-2-1, sold by the foot. You will want to use butt connectors # DW05745-5 to connect the wire to the brake assemblies.

The trailer breakaway kit I recommend is the Tekonsha Push To Test Breakaway Kit # PS50-85-320. This breakaway kit has a built-in multi-stage battery charger and a push-to-test button that indicates if the battery is fully charged, charging, or needs recharged. I have attached a link to an installation video of this breakaway kit for you to check out.

Since you are adding electric brakes to the trailer you will need a brake controller. I recommend P3, part # 90195. This is one of our most popular brake controllers because it is easy to install and operate. I have attached a link to a product review video for this controller.

If you do not have a 7-way trailer connector on your 2013 Highlander, you can use the Universal Brake Controller Installation Kit # ETBC7 to provide the wiring, hardware, and trailer connector needed to install a brake controller and provide signal to the trailer's brakes. I have attached the installation instructions for this kit, as well as an installation video of the kit on a Highlander you can check out.

I have also attached a link to a helpful article on adding electric brakes to a trailer.
